U.S. Supports Nigeria Amid Security Tensions
Nigeria Receives Military Support from U.S.
The United States Africa Command, AFRICOM, has confirmed the delivery of critical military supplies to Nigeria as part of ongoing security cooperation between both nations.
In a statement shared on social media, AFRICOM said U.S. forces delivered the equipment to Nigerian partners in Abuja, emphasizing a shared commitment to regional security and counterterrorism efforts. The post, which tagged the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, did not reveal the type or quantity of military equipment delivered.
The development comes amid heightened security and diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and the United States. On Christmas night, U.S. forces reportedly carried out airstrikes in Sokoto State, targeting Islamic State–linked militants accused of collaborating with the Lakurawa jihadist group and local armed bandit networks.
The strikes followed growing international scrutiny over allegations of violence and persecution against Christians in parts of Nigeria. U.S. President Donald Trump had previously described the situation as a “genocide,” a claim that was firmly rejected by the Nigerian government, which maintains that security challenges in the country are not religiously motivated.
Despite the disagreement, both countries continue to engage in military and diplomatic cooperation, with the latest delivery underscoring Washington’s support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
