The Christian body encouraged citizens to see Lent not only as a spiritual season, but also as a time for national responsibility and meaningful action.
CAN Speaks as Lent Begins in Nigeria
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN described Lent as a season for sober reflection and renewed national commitment.
The association urged citizens to think deeply about Nigeria’s direction and their personal roles in creating meaningful change. According to CAN, this Nigeria Lent plea goes beyond prayer and demands responsible action.
Nigeria’s Challenges Demand Action, Not Silence
CAN acknowledged that Nigeria is passing through a difficult period. Many households now struggle with rising living costs, limited job opportunities, and constant economic pressure.
In addition, persistent security concerns continue to unsettle communities across the country. These challenges, CAN noted, test public confidence and weaken national stability.
Policies Must Move From Paper to Practice
The Christian body stressed that Nigeria’s biggest challenge is not the absence of policies, but the failure to implement them effectively.
“Nigeria does not lack policies,” CAN stated. “The real challenge lies in enforcing them fairly, transparently, and in ways that bring real relief to citizens.”
CAN urged leaders at all levels to adopt inclusive decision-making and ensure government programmes reach households, young people, and vulnerable communities.
Reject Division, Violence, and Falsehood
As part of its Nigeria Lent plea, CAN warned against division, violence, and the spread of misinformation.
The association described Nigeria’s diversity—across faiths, ethnicities, and cultures—as one of the nation’s greatest strengths. It called for mutual respect, interfaith cooperation, and responsible civic behaviour to preserve peace and unity.
