FG Reaffirms Catholic Church Partnership for National Development

The FG Catholic Church partnership received renewed commitment as the Federal Government pledged stronger collaboration with the Catholic Church to drive national development, peace, and social cohesion across Nigeria.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, made this pledge while delivering a goodwill message to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at its First Plenary Meeting of 2026 in Abuja.

A statement shared on X by Akume’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, confirmed the development.

Church’s Role in Nigeria’s Moral and Social Growth

Akume described the plenary as a defining moment of reflection and pastoral guidance for both the Church and the nation. He thanked the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria for the invitation and praised the Catholic Church’s lasting influence on Nigeria’s moral, social, and developmental life.

He highlighted the Church’s vast network of schools, hospitals, and humanitarian institutions. According to him, these efforts have made “monumental” contributions to education, healthcare delivery, and support for people with low income and vulnerable communities.

Nigeria at a Defining Moment

Speaking further, Akume noted that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. He said citizens increasingly desire peace, justice, economic stability, and accountable leadership.

He stressed that the Catholic Church continues to act as a moral compass through its consistent advocacy for good governance, national unity, human dignity, and the sanctity of life.

“Pastoral letters and communiqués from the bishops often echo the conscience of the nation,” Akume said. “They challenge public office holders to embrace transparency, accountability, and servant leadership, not political opposition.”

Bridging Faith and Governance

As a Knight of St. John International, Akume emphasized the need to bridge faith and governance. He explained that public policies should reflect both moral integrity and administrative efficiency.

Reaffirming the FG Catholic Church partnership, he assured the bishops that the administration of Bola Tinubu remains committed to peacebuilding, interreligious harmony, youth empowerment, and inclusive national development.

Commitment to Peace and Social Protection

Akume also commended the Church’s role in dialogue, reconciliation, and interfaith cooperation, especially amid insecurity and social fragmentation. He urged Nigerians to see diversity as a strength rather than a source of division.

“The government remains committed to economic reforms, institutional strengthening, and social protection for the most vulnerable,” he said. “National transformation demands patience, sacrifice, and collective effort, and the prayers and moral support of the Church are invaluable.”

Prayers for National Stability

He concluded by applauding the Catholic bishops for their resilience and leadership. Akume prayed that the plenary meeting would produce resolutions that strengthen evangelisation, deepen pastoral care, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s stability and sustainable development.
