Catholic Bishops Elect New CBCN President

The Catholic Bishops Conference Nigeria president has changed following a new election. Catholic bishops have chosen Matthew Ndagoso, Archbishop of Kaduna, as the new President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

The election took place during the ongoing 2026 First Plenary Meeting of Catholic Bishops in Abuja.

Role of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria

The CBCN serves as the highest decision-making body of the Catholic Church in Nigeria. It guides spiritual matters and addresses social concerns. In addition, the Conference speaks on national issues that affect faith, morality, and the common good.

As Catholic Bishops Conference Nigeria president, Archbishop Ndagoso will lead these efforts for the next four years.

Ndagoso Replaces Outgoing CBCN President

Archbishop Ndagoso succeeds Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri. Ugorji completes his four-year term this February.

Under the new leadership, the Conference plans to strengthen unity among bishops and expand its engagement with Nigerian society.

Call for Prayers and Support

The Conference urged Catholics to pray for the new leadership. The bishops emphasized their commitment to faithful service, responsible leadership, and the promotion of peace and justice across Nigeria.

As the new Catholic Bishops Conference Nigeria president, Archbishop Ndagoso now begins a term focused on unity, moral leadership, and national engagement.
