Kukah to INEC: Deliver Credible 2027 Elections
Kukah Demands Clean and Credible Elections
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure credible and transparent elections in 2027. He warned that Nigeria cannot afford further electoral failures.
Kukah spoke at the Leadership Annual Conference and Awards 2025 in Abuja. The conference focused on political stability and sustainable development in Africa.
During his address, he made a passionate appeal for electoral integrity.
“By God, by whatever means, give us clean and credible elections,” he declared.
His statement drew loud applause from participants at the event.
Nigeria’s Future Depends on Electoral Integrity
Kukah stressed that credible elections remain central to Nigeria’s democratic survival. He explained that electoral transparency strengthens political stability and public trust.
He warned that ongoing electoral shortcomings could damage Nigeria’s progress. According to him, other African nations continue to move forward while Nigeria struggles with credibility issues.
He emphasized that Nigeria must act quickly to protect its democratic reputation.
Africa at the Center of Global Competition
Bishop Kukah also highlighted Africa’s growing importance in global economic and political competition. He noted that global powers are focusing on Africa’s rich mineral resources.
He explained that developed countries invest heavily in mining and resource protection. However, Africa still lacks influence in major global discussions.
He said global powers are shaping Africa’s future without Africa’s full participation.

Nigeria Must Lead Africa’s Progress
The Clergy stressed that Nigeria plays a critical role in Africa’s future. He said the continent’s growth depends heavily on Nigeria’s political stability.
“A roadmap to make Africa great again cannot proceed without Nigeria,” he said.
However, he warned that other African countries will not wait for Nigeria to fix its electoral system. He urged Nigerian leaders to act decisively and restore confidence in elections.
He added that debates over technology or result transmission methods should not distract from transparency.
“We must get it right,” Kukah said firmly.
Political Stability Remains Essential
Kukah described Africa as a continent facing serious internal challenges. He said conflicts and political instability weaken Africa’s global influence.
Despite these challenges, he expressed hope in national dialogue and reform.
He said the Leadership Conference provides an important platform for reflection. According to him, honest conversations help leaders identify solutions.
“This conference is about Nigeria—where we are and where we are going,” he said.
Call for National Unity and Excellence
Kukah also praised Nigerians who contribute to national development. He said progress requires commitment, cooperation, and resilience.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing excellence and service.
“We celebrate excellence, commitment, and resilient service to this nation,” he said.
Kukah concluded by urging Nigeria to strengthen its democratic institutions. He stressed that credible elections remain the foundation of national progress and global respect.
