Joshua Selman on Commanding Angels: It Is Unscriptural

Joshua Selman on Commanding Angels: “They Obey God’s Word, Not You”

Joshua Selman on Commanding Angels Sparks Debate

Joshua Selman on commanding angels has become a trending topic after the founder of Eternity Network International (ENI), also known as Koinonia, cautioned Christians against the practice.

The senior pastor, widely known for his teachings at Koinonia meetings, addressed the issue in a recent message monitored online. He stated clearly that believers should not command angels.

“That statement about commanding angels is unscriptural,” he said. “Angels do not respond to you; they respond to the Word of God.”

Expanding on his position, Selman explained that angels function under divine authority. They follow a spiritual code rooted in God’s Word.

“All spirits that are from God—righteous and clean spirits—are led by a central code, which is the Word of God,” he said. “They are not houseboys or housegirls that you command.”

According to him, many preachers make the statement sincerely. However, sincerity does not replace scriptural accuracy. He stressed that Scripture does not support the idea that believers can order angels around.

“Angels excel in strength. They obey the Word of God,” he added. “It only appears as though they are obeying the saints because those saints align themselves with the Word.”

Why Believers Must Align With Scripture

Joshua Selman on commanding angels emphasizes alignment with Scripture rather than spiritual presumption. He warned Christians not to trivialize angelic beings.

“If you see an angel physically, you will almost worship the angel,” he noted, referencing biblical encounters. “That command is because you have not seen an angel.”

His message underscores reverence and biblical balance in spiritual matters.

Angels and Their Assignments

While discouraging believers from commanding angels, Selman affirmed that angels play active roles in God’s plan.

He explained that:

  • Every believer has angels assigned to them.

  • Ministries fulfilling God’s purpose have angelic backing.

  • Some angels enhance revelation and understanding.

  • Angels work in partnership with the Holy Spirit.

He referenced the biblical account where the angel Gabriel brought understanding to Daniel. He also recalled Jesus’ teaching that children’s angels behold the face of God.

Prayer Attracts Angelic Deployment

Joshua Selman on commanding angels also highlighted the role of prayer. He stated that prayer, not commands, attracts angelic intervention.

“Angels can be around, but it’s your prayers that attract them,” he said. “There is a special deployment of angels at the instance of intercession.”

He added that spiritual warfare often involves such divine deployments.

A Call for Biblical Accuracy

Joshua Selman on commanding angels ultimately calls believers back to Scripture. He urged Christians to focus on obedience to God’s Word rather than issuing commands to spiritual beings.

His message reinforces a central theme: angels respond to God’s authority, not human instruction.
