US Lawmaker Warns Nigeria’s Break-Up Will Endanger Christians
Congressman Riley M. Moore dismisses claims of US-backed disintegration, says separatist agitations will worsen insecurity.
US lawmaker warns Nigeria’s break-up would deepen insecurity and expose Christians to greater danger.
A United States lawmaker, Congressman Riley M. Moore, has cautioned against calls for the break-up of Nigeria, warning that such moves would significantly worsen insecurity and place Christians at greater risk, particularly in the North and Middle Belt regions.
Moore dismissed claims that the United States supports any attempt to disintegrate Nigeria, describing such narratives as misleading and dangerous.
He made the remarks in a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account following an official visit to Nigeria.
During the visit, the congressman said he engaged in extensive consultations with Nigerian government officials, church leaders, humanitarian organisations, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) across different parts of the country to better understand the security situation.
“I have travelled to Nigeria and engaged in multiple high-level meetings with Nigerian officials, the Church, aid groups across the country, and IDPs, to get a better understanding of the rampant persecution of Christians in Nigeria,” Moore said.

He stressed that at no point during his engagements was the idea of Nigeria’s break-up discussed in any serious manner, insisting that promoting separatist agitations would only worsen the plight of vulnerable communities.
The US lawmaker further warned that weakening Nigeria’s unity would have grave security consequences, not only for the country but for the entire African continent.
“A destabilised Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent,” Moore noted.
Reaffirming his commitment to advocating for victims of violence, Moore said his concern extends beyond religious lines to all Nigerians affected by terrorism and insecurity.
“I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ and, for that matter, all Nigerians suffering from the instability wrought by terrorists throughout Nigeria,” he said.
Moore also referenced the recently signed US–Nigeria security cooperation agreement, describing it as a crucial step towards addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and strengthening bilateral ties.
“The US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement, and that is an important step in tackling the violence in Nigeria and deepening and strengthening the bilateral relationship between our great nations,” he added.
His comments come amid renewed debates over separatist movements and national unity in Nigeria, with security analysts warning that calls for disintegration could further complicate efforts to restore peace and stability across the country.
