Opay Raises Alarm Over Misleading Social Media Message
Digital financial services provider, Opay, has debunked a viral social media claim alleging that it credited users with ₦5,000 as part of a Christmas giveaway.
The misleading message, which gained traction on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, read: “Opay just sent every user ₦5,000 for Christmas Celebration. Did you receive yours?”
Reacting in a statement issued on Friday, December 26th, Opay described the claim as false and misleading, warning the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to fraudsters exploiting the festive season.
The fintech company clarified that it is not running any cash giveaway, promotional payout, or money distribution programme during the Yuletide period.
Opay further cautioned users against transferring money to unknown individuals and strongly advised against sharing sensitive personal or banking information, including Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).
The statement read: “Opay is not giving money to anyone during this festive season. Beware of scammers, do not transfer money to strangers, never share your BVN with anyone.”
